IMPLEMENTATION OF LEAN AND AGILE METHODOLOGIES TO ENHANCE COLLABORATION DURING THE DESIGN PHASE OF BIM PROCESSES

VIBHUTI CHOUDHARY

The aim of this research was the development of a BIM collaboration framework to enhance collaboration in the design phase of construction projects by implementing Lean and Agile methodologies. Despite the collaborative nature of BIM, challenges persist during the design phase. The literature demonstrates the collaboration gaps in the BIM design processes, however, there is a gap in the integration of Lean and Agile methodologies along with BIM. This research addresses this gap by investigating the implementation of the Last Planner System (LPS) and Scrum to enhance collaboration in BIM design.
A review of existing literature identifies potential methods for enhancing collaboration in the BIM design process. A comparative analysis of LPS and Scrum also facilitated leveraging them within BIM process. Subsequently, 14 interviews were conducted with professionals in the fields of BIM, Lean, and Agile, followed by a problem-solving workshop involving design thinkers. By synthesizing the findings, a BIM framework was created using LPS and Scrum for the design phase including elaboration of the prerequisites, process, roles and responsibilities, and limitations, which were verified in a focus group. This framework offers a practical solution for industry practitioners to improve collaboration practices, leading to improved project outcomes and performance.
